Central Location

Coláiste na Ríochta is located in Church street Listowel. Formerly Listowel Community College, the school has undergone significant developments in recent years. Coláiste na Ríochta is the only co-educational school in Listowel catering for boys & girls.

 Strong Supports for our students

The staff of Coláiste na Ríochta are committed to the holistic development of each student entrusted in their care. Students are supported in their studies and in their search for meaning and identity. All teachers thereby fulfil a pastoral role in helping students to realise their potential. Each cohort of students is assigned a year head that is available to monitor and support their day to day needs. For the student, it often means that they build up a relationship with this teacher and have a point of contact should they have any queries or concerns. The school also has Teacher/Student mentoring in place with programmes such as Friends for life that support the development of positive relationships in the school. Class sizes are small which allows for increased supports for your child. Coláiste na Ríochta also offers an extensive range of subjects at both Junior & Senior Cycle. We are the only school in Listowel that offers Spanish as a modern language option.

Committed to Assisting the Transition from Primary to Secondary

A range of school based initiatives are in place to assist first years’ with the transition from primary to secondary school.

Maintaining Contact with Parents / Guardians

An Academic Council is in place for exam students. This increases the contact parents have with the school in setting targets for your son or daughter. Parents are also centrally involved in all school activities such as; the end of year graduation, parent information evenings and guest speakers.

Coherent Literacy and Numeracy Strategy

The management and staff of Coláiste na Ríochta are committed to monitoring and improving the levels of literacy and numeracy among our student population. The staff is aware of the importance of improving students ‘literacy levels in written, aural and oral aspects of the curriculum in the context of preparing students for academic assessment but also in preparation for a full and meaningful future.

Following much collaboration and reflection as a school community, our School Improvement Plan (SIP) has been devised. In support of the effective implementation of this plan, strategies are employed by our teaching staff on an individual and departmental level and on a cross curricular basis. The school has in place additional programmes such as Catch up Literacy & Numeracy to support students who need additional supports. The Management and staff of Coláiste na Ríochta are committed to regularly reviewing and improving their practice and overarching plan for school improvement.

Our Partnership Approach to Fostering Positive Behaviour

Coláiste na Ríochta has a flourishing Student Council and as a result high priority is placed on student representation and consultation. Therefore it is with great confidence that we present all incoming students with a copy of our Code of Behaviour and ask them to enter into a good behaviour contract with the college on enrolment. There is an onus on students to show courtesy and respect to their peers and school visitors and reciprocate the positive and respectful behaviour shown to them by staff. Our college proudly advocates a system of positive reinforcement where good behaviour is recognised and rewarded accordingly. The code of Behaviour is available for inspection from the school.

Excellent Sports Facilities

The college has a positive relationship with Listowel Community Centre which ensures that we can offer sports facilities of the highest standard for our rich and varied P.E classes as well as for our supervised lunch time games.

Student Friendly Canteen Facilities

In tandem with our efforts to instil the importance of healthy eating in our students’ minds, our college hosts ‘The School Food Company’s’ bustling canteen which offers a salad bar, homemade soups, rolls, nutritious sandwiches and a range of hot and cold beverages. This is subsidized for all students. Our college also runs a free breakfast club each morning.

Excellent Computer and Technological Facilities

We have high speed internet connection and computer data projectors in every classroom. Such technology enables our vibrant, enthusiastic and highly trained staff to use the latest technology and resources in the delivery of their subjects. These resources enable staff to ensure students are tracked and monitored positively and assists parents who are updated accordingly.

Encouraging Self-directed Learning

Coláiste Na Ríochta strives to advocate self- directed learning with our student population. We believe that students should be empowered to enable them to become lifelong learners and therefore we have developed a reading corner and subject dedicated classrooms as well as programmes such as cross-curricular paired reading and the Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP). Coláiste na Ríochta also offers a number of full and part scholarships to residential summer courses in Gaeilge and French every year.

Cost Effective Book Loan Scheme

The school has a well-established student book loan scheme in a bid to reduce the financial burden on families. Students pay a contribution at the beginning of the school year and receive their books on loan from the school. Students must return these books at the end of the Junior/Leaving Certificate cycle so that they can be used for future students. This initiative has been a complete success and has met with widespread satisfaction from all stakeholders. The school fee of €140 is excellent value for all school books, school journal & locker for the academic year.
